Traditional Aftercare

Aftercare

  • Remove the bandage after 2-4 hours.

  • Gently wash your tattoo with warm water and a mild antibacterial soap (we recommend using orange, liquid Dial).

  • Wash your tattoo with your fingertips and the soap until tall the ointment and plasma have been removed.

  • Softly pat your tattoo dry with a clean towel and allow to air dry for 30 minutes.

  • For the next several weeks, when the tattoo feels very dry and/or tight, apply a thin layer or moisturizing ointment up to 2-3 times a day (we recommend Hustle Butter, Coconut Oil, or Aquaphor). Make sure to gently wash your tattoo, with antibacterial soap, in between each application.

  • Always make sure your hands are clean before touching your tattoo while it is healing.

~ Optional:

  • If it is later in the evening when you get your brand new tattoo, then you can keep the bandage on overnight (this can also help to prevent getting plasma and ink stains on your bedsheets).

  • If you choose to sleep with your bandage on overnight, then remove your bandage in the morning and proceed with the first step of the aftercare.

~ Friendly Reminders:

  • The normal healing time is 2-4 weeks

~ ALWAYS: Hydrate the tattooed area with moisturizer daily as this will help prolong the tattoo life and keep your colors fresh.

~ Things not to do in the healing process:

  • Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight while it is healing.

  • No tanning beds while tattoo is healing.

  • Do not were tight clothing over the tattoo while healing.

  • Do not immerse your tattooed area in water (no swimming, hot tubes, baths, or lakes) while healing.

~ ALWAYS AVOID: Direct sun exposure! This includes tanning beds. This will discolor and prematurely fade your cosmetic tattoo, especially repeated exposure over time. Always wear an SPF 30+

DO NOT PICK OR SCRATCH THE TATTOOED AREA, OR YOU WILL LOSE PIGMENT AND CAUSE SCARRING.

If you experience redness, swelling, tenderness at the tattooed area, red streaks going from the procedure area toward the heart, elevated body temperature, or purulent (foul-smelling) drainage from the procedure site you should seek medical help. THESE ARE ALL SIGNS OF INFECTION AND ARE SERIOUS. SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION IF THIS HAPPENS.

What to expect

STAGE ONE of HEALING: Immediately after finishing the tattoo, the skin around the tattoo will be red. Depending on the sensitivity of your skin the redness can vary, but is totally normal. The skin will release a fluid called Plasma (it is the clear part of the blood). Again this will vary per person and is totally normal. With the plasma fluid, you may see some excess ink that will also be released from the tattooed skin. After the procedure, we will apply a non-stick tattoo soaker pad over the tattoo.

*Depending on the skin sensitivity the redness will normally go away in a few hours. If the redness doesn’t go away within 1-3 days it is important that you contact your physician as it could be a sign of infection.

STAGE TWO of HEALING: You will experience itching around the tattoo. It is very important that you do not itch the area; itching can pull the scabs out of the skin and can take some of our ink along with it. Applying the balm can help relieve that itch. It is normal for there to be slight scabbing.

STAGE THREE of HEALING: This is where you slightly peel and have occasional itching, but overall the tattoo is basically healed. The ink has settled into the skin and something important to understand is that tattoos do not heal black. Although the tattoos start out black in color and are very crisp, when healed the lines will soften, swell slightly and the color will shift. Depending on the skin tone of your skin the ink will sometimes heal a bit bluer or greener. This is just the way the tattoo ink heals in the skin. We recommend you to continue to put balm on your tattoo for the full two weeks of healing.

*Things to understand about healing:

  • No two people heal the same.

  • Some healed results are darker, while other healed results are lighted.

  • Some heal more crips, others heal softer.

  • We can do two tattoos on the same person and depending on the placement areas, the tattoos can heal differently.

Tegaderm Aftercare

Aftercare

~ Day 1-3: Leave Tegaderm on. This protects the tattoo from outer elements like water, but also seals in some of the bodies natural healing fluids.

  • If you are allergic to adhesive (bandaids, tapes) gently wash the tattoo area within 4 hours and begin the blaming process.

  • If you aren’t allergic to adhesive, but end up experiencing any irritation around the bandaged area, immediately remove the Tagaderm and begging washing and blaming process.

~ Next 10 days: After removing Tegaderm, gently wash the tattoo area with your fingertips. Use warm water and a mild antibacterial soap (we recommend orange, liquid Dial) until all the ointment and plasma have been removed. Pat dry with a clean towel and allow it to air dry before applying aftercare balm. Continue to gently wash the tattoo once a day and use the aftercare balm 5-7 times a day. Make sure to gently wash your tattoo in between each application and always make sure your hands are clean before touching your tattoo while it is healing.
